Encounters of Beauty

Iran

Another center of production of decorative ketubbot is Iran, where illustrators in the Jewish communities of Hamadan, Teheran, Mashhad and Isfahan were inspired by contemporary designs found in carpets, coins and especially Persian Muslim marriage contracts. Indeed, the Persian Muslim tradition of illustrated marriage contracts is clearly reflected in the Jewish tradition. Two ketubbot in the collection of the National Library of Israel from the northeastern city of Mashhad are shown here. One ketubbah from 1831 (no. 86) in black and red ink features elaborate floral borders which were popular throughout Iran and devices culled from contemporary Persian manuscripts. The entire surface is filled, like a carpet. While less exuberant, the ketubbah from 1834 (no. 87) features delicate floral designs and relatively simple abstract decoration.
